Explore the Rock of Ages in Moab
Located in the spectacular Behind the Rocks area just 10 minutes outside of Moab, Rock of Ages Canyon is a classic 3/4‑day canyoneering adventure through a dramatic sandstone labyrinth. Famous for its huge rappels, striking geology and relatively less crowds due to it being more challenging, this route combines a scenic hike, a massive sandstone arch, narrow slots, and multiple rappels into a full‑value desert journey.
The adventure begins with a scenic but energetic approach hike through towering fins and sculpted slickrock formations to reach the canyon’s high entrance. This hike rewards you with breathtaking views of the surrounding desert and sets the stage for the technical descent ahead.
Once at the top, the canyon delivers on its reputation for big rappels. The first rappel — the longest of the day at around 160 feet — drops you beneath a massive natural arch that towers overhead and makes for an unforgettable introduction to rope work. You’ll continue deeper into the route with additional rappels of approximately 90 feet and 150 feet, each offering its own thrilling vertical perspective.
Between rappels, the canyon winds through narrow slot sections, water‑carved potholes, and short scrambling sections that reveal hidden features and color‑shifting sandstone walls. The mix of technical challenges and scenic beauty makes each step feel like part of a real desert expedition.
Rock of Ages is a perfect choice for guests looking for a longer day with more adventure than our half‑day trips. With dramatic scenery, large rappels, and technical terrain, this canyon provides an unforgettable exploration into one of Moab’s most fascinating landscapes.
