Before we talk about this amazing National Park, let’s dive into a quick history. In The early 1900’s a red dusty town in southeast Utah was in its infancy. The red rock area north of town had grasped the attention of many of the local characters like Alexander Ringhoffer, Loren Taylor and Doc Williams. Loren, who published some photos in the local paper, helped spread the word on the wondrous landscape. Not long after, a prospector Alexander Ringhoffer wrote to the Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1923. This effort was to gain funding and to publicize the area, with the end goal of creating a park. Areas of the Arches NP, like The Windows and Devil’s Garden gained the favor of the president. Arches National Monument was Signed 1929 by President Herber Hoover. In 1971, The Park received its National Park designation.
Fast Forward to 2024 and this exquisite expanse of red rock canyons and natural sandstone arches sees over 1.5 MILLION people a year. This massive spike in visitation has led the federal government to utilize a “timed entry” system that runs from April-October every year. This means that without an entry ticket and time slot, you cannot enter the park. Timed entry may sound like a bad thing, but it does help preserve the park, and mitigates traffic, restroom issues and helps to preserve the natural beauty of the Park without large crowds of people at one time. This Timed entry pilot system was considered a success in 2023 and that has led to its continual use in the future.
